All Californians 16+ Now Eligible for COVID-19 Vaccines

Following major milestones in its vaccination program, with almost half its population aged 16 and up and 73.9% of seniors over 65 have received one dose, all residents of the state of California ages 16 and above have become eligible for COVID-19 vaccinations as of April 15 th. This decision meets President Biden’s nationwide deadline for all adults in the U.S. to be eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine by April 19th.
“Today’s vaccine eligibility expansion is a major milestone in our state’s fight against the pandemic and another step on the path to reopening fully in the coming months. Thanks to the hard work of Californians who followed public health guidelines, our case rates and hospitalizations are among the lowest they’ve been since the start of the pandemic. California will need all hands on deck to keep up this progress, and I encourage everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible. Vaccinating all of those who are eligible will take time, but our statewide providers are ready to meet the increased demand and we are excited to get this vaccine into the arms of all Californians who want them, especially those in the hardest hit communities,” stated Governor Gavin Newsom.
On April 1 st , eligibility was expanded to residents aged 50 and above. Over 24 million doses have already been administered in California, 4.9 million of which have been administered in the hardest-hit communities. According to Blue Shield of California, the state-wide provider network is now equipped to administer up to 6 million doses weekly. Vaccines are being allocated in view of equitable distribution, with 40% being directed to the hardest hit
communities.
“As these life-saving vaccines put the worst behind us, it is important to not let our guard down, even after being fully vaccinated,” said Dr. Tomás Aragón, Director of the California Department of Public Health and State Public Health Officer, urging residents to continue to follow safety guidelines.
