The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched a significant initiative to strengthen global health resilience through a specialized Biomanufacturing Workforce Training program. This initiative specifically addresses the critical gaps in biomanufacturing capabilities that were brought to light during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. The program’s objective is to expand the production capacity for vital biological products, a crucial step towards enhancing the response to global health emergencies.Â
This new training program is part of a broader effort by WHO to facilitate equitable access to medical products and to decentralize biomanufacturing capabilities. By focusing on workforce development, the initiative aims to empower regions that have historically depended on international supply chains for critical health products. The training will align with WHO and international standards, ensuring a high level of quality and efficacy in local production efforts.Â
To operationalize this vision, WHSO is establishing a Global Training Hub in collaboration with the Republic of Korea. The hub will provide hands-on training in biomanufacturing facilities, focusing on the production of vaccines and other biological medicines. These programs will be complemented by regional training centers to ensure a wider geographical reach and to foster collaboration among different regions.Â
Expressions of interest will soon be invited for regional centers wishing to join this global network. This comprehensive approach aims not only to respond to immediate health crises but to build a foundation for sustained resilience in global health systemsÂ
